Cleaning gutters is a messy and dangerous chore, and it becomes even more complicated if gutter guards are installed as they’re required to be removed before cleaning, but this time bid adieu to the complications and clean your drainage system without removing the entire gutter system.

Before you start cleaning make sure to have these tools by your side:

  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • Bucket
  • Rope
  • Ladder
  • Garden hose with pistol grip nozzle
  • Pressure cleaner

Steps to follow

Step 1:

Place a cloth beneath your working area to catch falling leaves, twigs and other debris. Set up a good ladder against and safely secure the ladder’s base – a free-standing ladder is the best option if the ground is even. If you’re using an extension ladder, keep its three rungs extended above the roof’s edge.

Step 2:

Secure the ladder either by rope to tie the ladder at its base. You can even ask someone to hold it while you’re up there.

Step 3:

Roof edges can be ragged, sharp or there can be torn metal sometimes which probably can cause injuries if you’re not scrutinised. Besides, that is rife debris should never be touched with bare hands. Therefore it’s always advisable to wear a sturdy pair of work gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from dirt, animal waste, insects that may be residing under. Also, wear comfortable, non-slip rubber shoes which will provide grip while climbing a ladder.

Step 4:

Climb up the ladder with a bucket to collect the leaves and debris so you don’t throw the dirt on the ground and create another cleanup chore.

Step 5:

Remove the leaves accumulated over the roof as well as a gutter helmet to create a clean area where you can work. Use that bucket to collect all the debris.

Step 6:

There are numerous types of gutter cover available in the market. Some are attached using screws, clips or snaps while others such as plastic guards and gutter brushes are simply placed on the gutters without any accessories. Remove a section of gutter guards. Place it on a safe area of the roof or can even hand them to your helper. (You don’t need to remove the entire gutter guard system just remove a section.)

Step 7:

Rise out the gutter using a gutter hose, it’s best to consider a hose with a pistol-grip trigger spray nozzle. This nozzle will give you the liberty to change the water flow/pressure while making your job done easily. Meanwhile, keep up on checking if your downspouts are not clogged and free from debris. However, checking the water flow through the downspout will let you know that it is not clogged. Or if the downspout is clogged then run the water hose down the downspout in full pressure -the high pressure will clear the clog with force while clearing out the blockage.

Step 8:

Using the gutter scoop clear all the debris by power washing it. Ensure the water flow through drainage is without any halt. Flush out your downspout to make sure no debris is left inside. And if any stubborn blockages won’t respond to pressure then you may have to remove them using a long pole or rod to dislodge them.

Step 9:

Once you’re assured then re-attach the gutter guards on the place.
